Roxana Halls

Roxana Halls was recently announced as winner of The Derwent Special Award with her painting ‘Lisa’
Roxana Halls’ work has been exhibited widely and is held in numerous private and public collections in the UK and internationally. Frequently employing dark glamour and a wry deliberate humour, Halls’ paintings depicting female impropriety work within the tradition of feminist art to offer a riposte to self-censure. Halls is drawn to investigate the meaning of cultural trends and invites the viewer to reflect on notions of gender, class, sexuality and spectatorship.
In 2010 she was the winner of the Founder’s Purchase Prize in the Discerning Eye show, and she was the winner of Pride in the House at Lauderdale House, where she held her prize winning show ‘TINGLE-TANGLE & OTHER TALES’in 2011. In 2004 she was the winner of the Villiers David Prize, and in 2001 she received the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award.

She has had four successful solo exhibitions at the Beaux Arts Gallery in Bath, her work has been exhibited in numerous group shows both in the U.K. and California, including the National Portrait Gallery’s B.P. Portrait Award on five occasions, The National Open Art Competition, The Royal Society of Portrait Painters, The Ruth Borchard Self Portrait Competition, The Hunting Art Prize, The Garrick Milne Prize & Art Moorhouse. She has twice been invited to exhibit at The Discerning Eye show, and has also shown in regular group shows with Beaux Arts & Hayhill Galleries, both in Bath and at the London Art Fair.
Her work has garnered many reviews and features, including an interview with Ossian Ward for Time Out, Modern Painters, Art of England, Artists & Illustrators, The Independent, The Sunday Telegraph, Galleries, The London Evening Standard,City AM & Diva Magazine.

Commissions include Alan Grieve CBE, Chairman of the Jerwood Foundation and John Simopoulos, Emeritus Professor, St. Catherine’s College Oxford, and Nick Hackworth, Founder of Paradise Row Gallery for the collection of the late Brian Sewell.

Her work is in many public and private collections in the UK and internationally, including The Discerning Eye Collection, St. Catherine’s College Oxford, the late London Evening Standard Art Critic Brian Sewell, Katherine Parkinson, Bel Mooney, Claire Thomas, Kelly-Anne Lyons, Sophie Parkin and Barry & Debbie Bliss.

Roxana Halls has, for several years, made her studio in the disused bar of a 1930s London theatre, now a bingo hall.

Her solo exhibition, SHADOW PLAY, was held at Hayhill Gallery, Cork Street, London, in November 2011.
‘ROXANA HALLS’ TINGLE – TANGLE’ was exhibited at the National Theatre, South Bank, London in 2009.
