Joaquin Trujillo

An artist, curator, editor and the youngest of eleven siblings, Joaquin Trujillo was raised in a small town on the outskirts of Zacatecas Mexico. His determination manifested itself at the early age of 12 when he left his home for Los Angeles. There he lived with his brothers in a one-bedroom apartment. He remembers his first trip home after months of living in LA. Riding in the back of the pickup on the dirt road to his parents’ ranch, the landscape was clouded by dust being kicked up from the truck’s oversized wheels. As they neared the front porch his father’s face appeared through the dissipating sediment. He was older. Traveling back and forth from LA to Mexico became Joaquin’s way of life—a way of nomadic stability. With one bag still packed, he now calls Brooklyn home. His commercial practice continues to lead him all over the world. These consistent breaks of time and space are sewn into the fabrics of his work and influences. While many artists step behind the lens to capture a moment, Joaquin uses the camera to reconstruct the past—to fill in the gaps. He imports a body of work and a worldview inflected with a freshness of vision and technique. His potent yet subtle approach to color and texture emulates a structured slippage of heritage. Building upon the dichotomy of his Mexican heritage and American education, he weaves together an uncanny modality of childhood innocence across culture, place and time. Bio by

Los Niños  “When I was a child being raised in Mexico, I recall my mother preparing the family for the all-important family portraits. it was an elaborate affair, where everyone looked their best in specially-chosen clothes and well-groomed hair. These photographs were declarations of our family pride and self-worth. My subjects are mostly nieces and nephews, so before each shoot I continue my family tradition of reminding each one of their beauty and integrity and inspiring them to focus on their feelings of self-worth and dignity. Individually, each of the los Niño’s portraits acts as a visual testament to the potential and ambitious intentions of the young subject. As a series, los Niño’s offers a striking and elegant portrayal of culture that cherishes not only the modern values of beauty, grace and style, but also the more classical and romantic ideals of dignity and valor.” Joaquin Trujillo

Flores “Flowers are really important in my mother’s and sisters’ homes—not just on birthdays and anniversaries, but everyday and year round—on their patios and throughout their houses. They all have their favorite color, aroma, shape and name, “un clavel o una rosa para la mujer hermosa”. The flowers are the representation of the love and support they have given me. My arrangements represent what I have consciously and unconsciously obtained from them as well as what has made me the man  I am today.” Joaquin Trujillo
