Be Smart About Art Networking and Talk
This is a ticketed event.
Friday, February 23, 2018 at 6:30 PM – 8:30 PM
#besmartaboutart networking is a monthly opportunity to meet artists, curators & other art world peers, view exhibitions and spaces, and expand knowledge – creative and professional alike!
In February, we’re heading to ‘Threesome’ at New Art Projects, a collaborative exhibition by three women painters in association with critic and invited curator Anna McNay, exploring the female gaze. Treats are in store as we will hear Anna speak about the exhibition AND Fred Mann, Gallery Director, talking about the gallery, the way it works and what is coming up next.
About the Exhibition:
Threesome features art by Sadie Lee, Roxana Halls and Sarah Jane Moon, all figurative artists, each with a distinctive and unique style, whose queer identities inform much of their work. These painters engage with the theme of sexuality in singular and compelling ways and offer arresting interpretations of the ‘female gaze’.
Differing notions of queer identity are explored here and this group invites aesthetic as well as ideological scrutiny. These gay women make bold, alluring, witty and deft works, which seek to foreground the idea of the female gaze and explore how they look at each other and themselves. The show’s title, ‘Threesome’, makes a coolly sardonic reference to the voyeuristic aspect of lesbian representation: any eroticism in these works is strictly intentional.
Running in tandem to ‘Threesome’ we will also view ‘3×3’ a showcase of photographic self-portraits by nine queer female artists, whose work, to varying degrees, and consciously or not, interrogates the notion of the female gaze and self-identity.
About the Gallery:
New Art Projects is the contemporary gallery of Fred Mann. Through his gallery he seeks to support the work of emerging and mid career artists internationally. He regularly deals with both public and private collections, curators and press.
