For her solo show at the Draw Art Fair Aly Helyer has created 48 works on paper. This series entitled “the Forerunners” makes direct reference to a multi-figure work in the National Gallery London, attributed to Fra Angelico called “The Forerunners of Christ with Saints and Martyrs”, part the group : Fiesole San Domenico Altarpiece. In this celebrated gold ground work multiple figures are shown coming to earth ahead of the arrival of Christ. Renaissance, Mannerist and Gold Ground Italian paintings are a huge influence on Aly Helyer. She is fascinated not only by the extraordinary use of colour in these works but also in the composition of figures, and how the gestures and hand movement of the figure are symbolic. Her series of 48 gouache and tempera works each represent a single male figure, and together they form and extraordinary multi-figure grid.
Along side these works Helyer will show three new works on panel which explore multi figure compositions as well as a beautiful screen print edition created especially for the Draw Art Fair, which is also available in a hand coloured unique variation variety.
